We forgot the lesson of the World Wars when it came to Iraq

If you conquer a country and things get worse for its people, they are going to hate you and there will be more trouble. Extreme hardship equals extreme politics, which is going to be unpleasant for somebody.

If Iraq was ever going to be anything but a disaster (which, given our previous moral authority, it may well have been) we made it certain by failing to reconstruct and re-order after the invasion.
